This study was conducted to test the relationship of maternal demographic, obstetric and behavioral factors with birth weight. Study subjects were 608 mothers of a full term normal baby randomly selected from 47, 783 mothers who had delivered a baby at one of five major hospitals in Taegu City between 1 April 1991 and 31 March 1994. Demographic and medical data were obtained from the medical record. Other data were collected by telephone interview.

Mean birth weight of 608 infants was 3,377gm and the birth weight of boys was heavier than girls by 129gm and the birth weight increased significantly up to 41st gestational week. Mean birth weight increased with birth order up to 3rd baby but decreased at 4th and higher order babies. Mean birth weight also increased with maternal age between 20 and 34 years and maternal body mass index. Lower birth weight was associated with history of spontaneous abortion and pregnancy complications. No significant correlation was found between birth weight and degree of morning sickness, chronic

diseases of mother, level of prenatal care, acute diseases during pregnancy, employment of mother, and smoking of father. Multiple regression analysis using stepwise forward selection method showed that birth weight was significantly associated with in the order of prepregnancy weight of mother, sex of baby, gestational age, and birth order.
